Comparison Help & Manual version 3 versus version 2
Return to Introduction
Help & Manual 3 was released in November 2001. What has changed since version 2.7? Here is an overview of the most important features we implemented in version 3 - a lots of reasons to upgrade!

Faster than everHelp & Manual 3 is now 30% faster. Most of the increase in speed is due to the new project file format, which is significantly smaller and subsequently faster.

Improved HTML exportHelp & Manual creates cross browser compatible html files - browser based help. The new html export is more accurate (exact font sizes), lets you fully customize the layout of the topic pages and last, not least, it creates an expandable Table of Contents for easy navigation. Browser based help is platform independent and Java-applet free. No fuss with the missing Java VRT in Windows XP!

Variable HTML layoutsDifferent layouts for HTML Help and browser based help are supported. Help & Manual uses html templates which can be fully customized. If you want to apply your own corporate design or implement additional functionality (Java, ASP, PHP, etc.) you will appreciate the new level of freedom.

Native PDF exportPDF has become more and more important as a wide-spread, cross-platform file format. Unlike html, PDF is printer orientated, so it's perfect for creating electronic user manuals that can easily be printed. We are really proud of the PDF export and the layout capabilities! No other help tool gives you the freedom to create your own corporate PDF layout.

Electronic books Help & Manual creates e-books in Windows 32 bit executable format. No installation, no browser, no .dlls, no problems. This export format is great for CD rom presentations and stand-alone documentation.

Visual manual designerVersion 3 ships with a visual manual designer. These print manual templates let you fully customize the layout of printed manuals and PDF files. The print preview is now 100% WYSIWYG (except hardware limitations).

New print engineThe new print engine supports true booklet printing and draft printing.

Image editor includedHelp & Manual comes with a new image editor especially designed to create great looking screen shots. The built-in hot spot editor lets you easily apply sensitive areas to your images.

Generally more convenientThe user interface is even tidier than that of version 2. The new project properties dialog now combines all project dependent settings and assists with unobtrusive context sensitive help. Interactive dialogs and report windows help you quickly locate problems and solve them.

Tables and StylesMissing tables were one of the shortfalls of previous versions of Help & Manual. Version 3 now supports tables as well. Styles can be freely added (no longer restricted to 6 styles) and easily applied. New paragraph options offer control over the print layout and keep lines together that should not be separated.

Modular help systemsImproved support for modular help systems: multiple help files are merged at run time.

Copy & pasteTable of Contents supports copy & paste! You can easily copy topics or entire chapters from one help project to another.

Text variablesInstead of writing hard coded product names and version numbers, use a repository of text variables that you can quickly change. Several variables are already predefined and can be extended by your own list of variables. The same text variables are consistently used in topics, keywords, manual templates and html layout templates.

Embedded topicsSimilar to text variables you can include one topic into another.

Conditional textYou can include or exclude topics, chapters or parts of the topic text into or from a particular output format. This is useful when including large screen shots in a printed manual or PDF, while the images are omitted in the online help.

Find & replaceSupports keywords as well. A keyword finder displays the keyword index at design time and helps you to find duplicates or detect missing keywords.

Multiple undoThe topic text editor supports multiple undo.

Project reportsGreatly improved interactive project reports give you a quick overview of the state of your help project.

Topic statusTopics may be marked with a specific status, such as: complete, under construction, etc. The topic status is visible in the Table of Contents

BookmarksDesign time bookmarks have been improved with automatic and additional comments.
